Constraining reionization using the thermal history of the baryons

چکیده
The thermal evolution of the intergalactic medium (IGM) depends on the reionization history of the universe. Numerical simulations indicate that the low density IGM, which is responsible for the low column density Lyα forest, follows a well defined temperature-density relation. This results in a cut-off in the distribution of line widths as a function of column density. We use hydrodynamic simulations to calibrate the relation between the cut-off and the temperature-density relation and apply this relation to Keck spectra spanning a redshift range z = 2–4.5. We find that the temperature peaks at z ∼ 3 and interpret this as evidence for reheating due to the reionization of helium.

Radiative Transfer Effects during Photoheating of the Intergalactic Medium
The thermal history of the intergalactic medium (IGM) after reionization is to a large extent determined by photoheating. Here we demonstrate that calculations of the photoheating rate which neglect radiative transfer effects substantially underestimate the energy input during and after reionization. The neglect of radiative transfer effects results in temperatures of the IGM which are too low ...
متن کاملImprint of Inhomogeneous Reionization on the Power Spectrum of Galaxy Surveys at High Redshifts
We consider the effects of inhomogeneous reionization on the distribution of galaxies at high redshifts. Modulation of the formation process of the ionizing sources by large scale density modes makes reionization inhomogeneous and introduces a spread to the reionization times of different regions with the same size. After sources photo-ionize and heat these regions to a temperature & 10K at dif...
متن کاملConstraining the Water Activity during Peak Metamorphism in a Thermal Aureole; a Mineral Equilibria Approach
In order to assess the presence or absence of fluids under peak metamorphic conditions within the inner aureole of the Etive igneous complex in west Scotland, eight suitable metabasic hornfels samples and one suitable pelitic hornfels were used to calculate water activities using a mineral equilibria. Calculated activities for water are lower than unity in the pelitic sample and extremely low i...
متن کاملConstraining the reionization history with large angle CMB polarization
The first-year WMAP data release has shown that the reionization optical depth to CMB photons is greater than previously thought. This follows from unexpectedly high values of the C l spectrum, for l up to ∼ 30, presumably allowing a measurement of the E-mode polarization spectrum C l , sooner than expected. This note aims to test the capability of large-angle polarization experiments to explor...
متن کاملCosmic Microwave Background Polarization and reionization: constraining models with a double reionization
Reconstructing the history of cosmic reionization would provide a basic insight on the first objects forming in the world. This is a non trivial task, in view of seemingly contradictory results, as (i) the growth of the neutral hydrogen fraction around QSO’s at z ∼ 6 − 7 and (ii) WMAP estimates of a large optical depth τ, indicating a much earlier reionization. The apparent conflict is overcame...
